earth week con’t: ARBOR DAY

steel yard arbor day poster

FRIDAY, APRIL 30

10 AM // ARBOR DAY TREE PLANTING // the steel yard, 27 sims ave

Sassafras Albidum. Betula Papyrifera. Taxodium Distichum. Rhus Typhinia. Acer Rubrum. No, we aren’t casting any spells and the keyboards in our office all work just fine. These are varieties of the 113 trees being planted at the Steel Yard on National Arbor Day!

It’s been over six months since the jungle that was the ‘back 40′ was cleared for remediation and when the vines that climbed their way to the top of the gantries were yanked down. But now that spring is in the air and construction is drawing to a close, it’s time to welcome the color green back to the Yard! Please join us on April 30th, along side Groundwork Providence and Trees 2020, for a day of tree planting and celebration. Planting will begin at 10 AM and go through the afternoon. Everyone is welcome!

    Earth Day Waterfire Clean-up

    Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

    waterfire_earthday
WaterFire Providence invites all of our friends in the community to join us at the river for a pre-season Earth Day clean-up!
    Thursday, April 22: 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
    Saturday, April 24: 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

There is a lot of ground (and river!) to cover in Waterplace Park- so gather your friends, brooms, gloves and sunscreen, and spend some time with us out in the springtime sunshine! We’re gathering volunteers to spruce up the paths and walkways of this beloved public space and rid our rivers of the tires, barrels, chairs and general bits of detritus that have accumulated since last season.

Please contact WaterFire’s Volunteer Coordinator Allison Montagnon – allison@waterfire.org or 401.273.1155 x170 – to sign up and participate in this great community building initiative!

    event recap: DEMO GARDEN

    Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Sunday was the first RISD Earth Week event: the Demo Garden ‘Her/ban’ forage Tour and Workshop. If you missed it here is the summary of the day by Demo Garden Coordinator, Devon Miller.

We spent the first half talking about our experience with herbal medicine/remedies and then Rachael (Elmaleh) guided us on a tour outside. We looked at and learned about mullein, plantain, dandelions and violets among other herbs. When we returned to the nature lab we drank nettle-peppermint tea and talked about the different ways you can utilize the herbs -from tinctures and salves, to creams and teas. Rachael then demonstrated how to make an all-purpose healing salve. We watched as she poured the herb infused olive oil into a double boiler, added several drops of essential lavender oil and organic local beeswax. Once the wax had fully melted she poured the mix into small metal tins. After about 10 minutes the mixture had hardened and we each had a new healing balm to take home with us.

Sounds like a great time! Stay tuned for pictures of this and other earth week events to come.
